Polartec® Alpha® fabric is an extraordinary insulator: soft, stretchy, and lightweight. A few years ago, we thought it would be perfect for a base layer, but in direct contact with the skin, it tended to feel damp and clammy. Looking for more insulation for sub-zero gravel rides, we tried using Alpha® prototypes as a second layer over a Prosecco base layer and discovered one of the best combinations for riding in the cold. We worked on the details and created this second layer for cold rides. The half-zip avoids creating bulk in the lower torso, while the slightly off-center placement reduces the bulk of multiple zippers in the neck area. We maintained a close-to-body fit, so you can choose whether to tuck it into your tights or leave it out, as we do. We also found that it works perfectly over a Flanders, Bandito, Miracolo, or Seamless base layer.
