BlackChili Compound: The Ultimate Balance. The rolling properties of a tire's rubber compound are primarily determined by three interacting factors: friction [grip], rolling resistance, and mileage [longevity]. The dilemma: if you improve one of these factors, it may have a detrimental effect on at least one of the others. A tire with maximum grip wears faster and rolls slower. If you then roll a faster and more durable tire, the grip, in turn, is reduced.

With our BlackChili Compound, a tread compound that is always based on the latest polymer knowledge and raw material research, we have provided the cycling industry with a long-lasting solution. Depending on the application of a tire, we adjust the compound formulation for the specific discipline: road or mountain bike, time trial or downhill.

How does it work? For BlackChili, we refine specialty synthetic rubbers with proven natural rubber into high-performance tread compounds. To these mixtures we then add soot particles, which in turn are optimised in shape and surface properties. The complex compound technology is so sensitive that tires with BlackChili Compound are produced exclusively in our German plant in Korbach.

Vectran: The benchmark in puncture protection

Vectran™ is a high-tech fiber synthetically produced from a natural model. Like spider silk, Vectran™ is a liquid crystalline polymer (LCP). Vectran™ is spun from the molten liquid polymer Vectra and further processed into a multi-strand yarn. Spider silk like Vectran™ has enormous tear resistance with very low weight: Exactly the right properties to be used as a puncture protection insert in a premium Continental bicycle tire. A Vectran™ Breaker is lighter, more flexible, and offers more effective cut protection than a similar nylon breaker. Vectran™ Breaker does not negatively affect rolling resistance.
