Recent developments have made carbon fiber wheels nearly as durable as alloy wheels, but they're typically significantly more expensive. If durability and affordability are your two key characteristics, there's nothing better than alloy rims. We sought to create a wheelset that possessed all the qualities of carbon fiber wheels—lightweight, stiffness, and aesthetics—with the strength and durability needed for high mileage. Thus, the SLX 24 Disc wheelset was born.

The wide profile of the SLX 24 Disc is what sets it apart from other wheels in the same weight range. Other wheels are typically much narrower internally, but the SLX 24 can even accommodate cyclocross tires without issue. This reduces rolling resistance thanks to the ability to run lower pressures and wider tires. Wide rims and tires are perhaps a strange concept, but together they can significantly improve ride quality and performance. With the increased air volume, lower pressure is needed to achieve the same puncture resistance.

Performance-wise, lower pressures lead to lower rolling resistance because the wheel absorbs road imperfections instead of bouncing over them. When the pressure is very high, these bumps waste precious watts; however, at lower pressures, these imperfections are absorbed and the power output is converted into forward motion. It also improves grip, and therefore traction and safety on winding roads.

While we aimed for an affordable price, we made sure not to compromise on quality. The 24mm deep rims made from premium aluminum are lightweight and durable. The wheels are hand-assembled with the same aero disc hubs (AFD) found on our carbon fiber wheels, laced with DT Swiss Competition spokes. The end result is a wheelset weighing just 1515 grams. Hand-assembly is an increasingly rare task, but it's essential for building the best wheels.
